Welcome to my about page for nseriesus.com, home of the Nokia Daily News. This site is maintained and updated by Matthew Bennett, a resident of San Francisco, California. I started this blog to experiment with the new video hosting services, and to freshen up on things like blogging, Wordpress and SEO. I also wanted to start a site that needed daily updates. I’m building myself a Seinfeld Chain…
I’ve been into fones, hacking and electronics my entire life. When I was eight, my cousin showed me how to solder wires to a motor to make an electric boat, and I’ve been tinkering ever since. I started programming computers on an Apple IIe, and purchased a Timex Sinclair 1000 shortly there after. I’ve been working as a helpdesk tech/network admin since 1995. I’m currently employed by Wilbur Ellis, located in the financial district of San Francisco.
I picked up the nickname tron from Jay at Receiver Design, who started calling me Bennettron around 15 years ago. Around that same time, I realized that cellular devices can be more than just phones in 1996, when I found that my AT&T phone had an email address. I began configuring my servers, switches and routers to alert me of trouble. By 2004 I had a Sprint Samsung A620 camera phone, and I was the most posting user on Buzznet.com for the first year.
After coming from a computer background where openness and configurability determines usefulness, the limitations imposed by the Sprint A620 frustrated me. I couldn’t transfer my pictures from my phone to my computer, upload ringtones or themes, or customize the user interface. I needed more power. I needed more freedom and openness. I needed a Smart Phone. I friend told me she was a Nokia Brand Loyalist, and that may have been the first time I’d heard that term with such conviction.
After I purchased a Cingular Nokia 6682, I was hooked. The Nokia PC Suite empowered me to do what I needed, and the S60 OS was way more open than I was expecting. Since then, I’ve also owned a N73, and I’m currently using a N95-3. I support Mobile Devices at my day job, where I support E61i’s, E62’s, E90’s, Palm and Windows Mobile devices. I tend to think about my mobile devices from a networking standpoint over a telephone device.
Through all the devices I’ve had over the years, the limitations dictated the use. Now that we have a pocketable device with cellular connections, picture and video capability, GPS positioning, I’m imagining their users more as cyborgs. We’re all nodes on a global network with increasing connectivity for more than just data, and that gets me excited. The limitations are disappearing rapidly, and everyone is expecting big changes in this industry.
I believe we’re just starting to see some big changes in the world, and I see the mobile device as the central hub for each user on this planet. This website is intended to serve as a resource for everyone interested in riding this exciting new wave along with me.
I’m also a dirt-bag skateboarder. If you’d like to see some videos, I contribute ollies, grinds, video editing and site design to owlface.com
I hope you enjoy your stay.
