Adobe has a developers initiative going on called The Open Screen Project. It’s a collaboration between Adobe, NBC, Intel, Verizon, Palm, Qualcomm, Zii Labs, Samsung and others.
The purpose of Open Screen is to enable Flash content on non-computer devices, like your mobile device or your TV. Imagine widgets in the corner of your Monday Night Football with interactive elements, and you get the picture. Developing an application for mobiles is just as easy. One of the videos shows Species Explorer, an easy to use bird tracking service for the Nokia 5800MX and N97 devices.
For developers, using Flash is signifigantly easier than trying to target multiple different platforms. Hell, even making a website work in IE is a challenge, so why not just hand the heavy lifting off to Flash? Couple this with the fact that Flash has been around almost ten years, and has millions of developers, and it’s a good fit for rolling out content fast.
So now that you know why OpenScreen is a cool project, go check out some of the videos posted on the new YouTube Open Screen channel.
