Fireside chat with Julien Fourgeaud of the Symbian Foundation

I recently had dinner with Julien Fourgeaud of the Symbian Foundation. Julien was in town to participate in the keynote panel discussion at a Navigation and Location Services conference. We had a nice chat about the present and future of the Symbian Foundation. We cover the migration from S60 to SF2 to SF3, upcoming hardware, QT, and new manufacturers on board with Symbian. Enjoy!

Make sure you also check out Ideas.symbian.org. They’re making a HUGE effort to get community feedback rolled into future versions of Symbian. This website provides direct input from end users to be heard by the developers of Symbian. This is a Big Deal.

A little background on Julien : He was with Nokia in Finland for 2 years, and was the Leader for 3rd party apps integration on the N97. Now he’s the Roadmap Catalyst for the Symbian Foundation in London. He also races cars, parachutes and paraglides, and is an all-around ActionMan with a kung-fu grip. What a ruler! You really should follow Julien on Twitter.

I think your facial expressions (although it was dark) were pretty funny, especially during the “steam-punk” part of the conversation.

Thanks, Rosh! I don't even remember that part, so I'll hafta go back and watch it again. I don't really hate steampunk, I'm just a utilitarian.

Actually, I thought your expression indicated that you were surprised
that he asked you if you have heard of steampunk, as if he as asking
if you have ever heard of Google.

I enjoy your tnkgrl video series. It would be cool if you two could
do a show or a regular part of your show where you show the benefits
of using a particular phone or platform by performing the same task on
    the two different phones/platforms.

haha, yeah. I give everybody that look, because I've got my finger on the pulse of the internet! : )

I like your idea of trying different tasks on different phones. I'd love to do that, and I think it'd be very valuable to many people! I do not have the time to actually put that together. Editing and rendering video, even this little uncut 21 minute clip, takes DAYS. I rendered this video three times to get the quality good enough, with a file size small enough for Vimeo. Even with a ripping fast computer, it's still a very slow process. Video is still hard, and it annoys me to no end.

What I was thinking was that you and tnkgrl could do it as part of
your uncut show, or even just talk about it (though video of the phone
itself would be ideal but difficult given your time constraints).

Someone in the Symbian blogosphere mentioned a great app idea: a
screen-recording app. It would certainly make these types of videos a
    lot easier.
