Exclusive N97 walkthrough video

Here at CTIA, Julien Fourgeaud from Nokia gave us a nice 15 minute walkthrough of the N97′s hardware, homescreen, widgets and WRT. tnkgrl and I were both filming, but we’re presenting the entire video uncut. The N97 firmware is shaping up nicely, and getting prettier every time I see it. The widgets are pretty nice, as they take your A/GPS context into account to bring you up to the minute data on your contacts and relevant to your location.

Symbian releases roadmap for OS

The newly reformed Symbian Foundation, after being purchased by Nokia in 2008, have announced the roadmap for thier OS release schedule. They’re aiming for a first release of the new Symbian Foundation OS V2 to deveolpers in 1H09, with devices on the market by 4Q09. Subsiquent releases will be rolled out every six months, bringing consummers V4 devices towards the end of 2010.

The Sony Ericson Idou, shown at Mobile World Congress, is the first device announced that will run Symbian Foundation V2 software. Developers itching to try the software, it’s based heavily on S60V5.1, which the current SDK supports. Download from dev.nokia.com/forum

I wanted to give you guys a quick update on what’s going on here.

Since quitting the Nokia Daily News, I’ve been getting more good feedback on the site. Doing the daily news was tough for a few reasons. It was too time consuming. The information was only useful for a few days. Video doesn’t index, so the hits weren’t going up fast enough. Uploading videos on DSL bandwidth sucks.

So what’s the plan, you ask?

I’m planning to continue some form of Nokia News, probably in a weekly video format, around ten minutes long. I’m going to try to feature the most relevant news articles, and discuss why certain news bits are important IMHO. Do YOU viewers care about production? This could either go More Produced and shiny, or less produced and easytech. Think Qik vs HD, which way should we go?

I’m planning on a full retheming of nseriesus.com soon. I’ve also had a FlashLite developer volenteer to make a mobile version of this site, including video! If that happens, I may need to start up the Nokia Daily News again.

Talking with tnkgrl should continue. I’m hoping to bring more Blogger and Industry Insider interviews, device demos, and Application howtos and walkthroughs. Sound good? More valuable? Really boring?

I’m also working on a new site, which will cover all aspects of the US Mobile Industry. The North American market has traditionally been behind Europe and Japan, but I don’t beleive that’s the case today. We’ve got nice devices, some US exclusive launches, and reliable $20/mo unlimited 3G + 3.5G networks. The time for whining about barriers in the US market are done. We’ve got it as good or better than any market, as I see it. Can you find the new site? It’s up now.

I just wanted to say thanks for bareing with me, my mobile freinds. I think the changes will be a good thing. The RSS feeds and the Podcast feeds may change, but don’t unsubscribe just yet. Music Express 5800 quickie

I was lucky enough to get to play with the Nokia Music Express 5800 at the Symbian Partners Event. It’s a nice little device. In this video, I go through some of the menus, and check out the different standby screens. This is the first three minutes I’ve spent with S60 v5. It was totally intuitive (for a S60 user).
